Usually, when I get a request to link with someone on a social network like LinkedIn, Facebook, or my newest one, Plaxo's Pulse network, I do my best to look at that person's profile to determine if it's somebody appropriate to connect with. I reach out beyond those people I know personally--as a recruiter it's an occupational necessity--but I still want to make sure that my network is growing and expanding with viable contacts.
The biggest problem I've noticed so far with Plaxo/Pulse is that, pretty as it is, I cannot peek at the profile of someone not in my network until I have already connected.
I'm not sure why the creators of it would have set it up that way, and I'd sure like to see an explanation for it. It runs counter to the way I try to use my online networks. They are still in Beta. Hopefully, they'll change it.
